Every once in a while the people who deserve it the most actually do win.
The Evolution of the Willie Ross Foundation
Through the kindness of others, the unwavering talent of a remarkable staff, and a clear simple mission, we have been able to provide a safe haven and a place to grow for developmentally disabled, deaf and autistic adults since 1982… The rewards of bringing meaning to so many lives has been a true blessing - yet the battles for funding and survival have been a constant struggle. Blessings or battles, the process has led us to a long term solution that is better than anything we could have anticipated.
Our Transition: The Willie Ross Foundation has transitioned our clients from a residential model to a supported living model. This preferred level of support was never before an option for us because of the nature of our clients. However, due to the behavioral successes we’ve had over the last few years, our clients have now qualified for a Supported Living Program.
The Program: Under the Supported Living Program, our 10 clients, including Willie, will be moving from the 2 homes we currently operate into their own apartments/condos- two per apartment, plus staff. They will have more freedom with the same level of care and be able to explore and develop their own strengths and interests… an opportunity to be self-directed. And, we have arranged for all of our entire staff to follow the clients over to the new program...a huge component in their adjustment to the new situation. It’s a remarkable opportunity to ensure the quality of life we have always maintained for Willie and the other clients.
How your future contributions will help Willie and the other clients: The financial model of the Supported Living Program shifts the fiscal responsibilities directly to the consumers (through a money manager). Our staff and the new housing arrangements will now be paid through the Supported Living Program. Because of this, our need for financial support is greatly reduced. Nonetheless, there is a need for us to keep raising funds to support other activities for Willie and the others (day excursions, equestrian programs, entertainment and random “dinners out"). The Foundation will remain a 501c(3) organization and your donations will continue to enhance the quality of life for Willie and the "alumni" of the Foundation.
A clear 100% win is a rare thing...and this is one of them.
